Tree service in Semmes, the fastest-growing city in Mobile County

Semmes grew 5.9 percent in a year to about 6,200 people, and most of that is new houses on land that was pine woods and pasture. Clearing it right, and taking down the pines that won't stand, is most of what we do here.

Forestry mulcher clearing underbrush, small pines and sweetgum from a wooded lot in west Mobile

Semmes, northwest of Mobile along Moffett Road, was the fastest-growing city in Mobile County in the latest Census estimates, up 5.9 percent to 6,193. It was pine plantation, nurseries and pasture for a century (the nursery business is still here), and now it's subdivisions and five-acre tracts going in along Wulff Road, Snow Road and Schillinger Road North. Every one of those starts with a lot to clear, and ends, if it's done wrong, with a row of tall thin pines left standing alone beside a new house.

So land clearing is our main work in Semmes: forestry mulching for underbrush and small pines, bigger timber felled and hauled, the live oaks and well-spaced longleafs flagged to stay, and the thin pines near the building pad taken out while the machine is on site. Semmes has its own city government and permits for grading and building run through it; a residential lot has no tree permit. The older places along Moffett Road and Howells Ferry have mature pecans, water oaks and the occasional big live oak, and those get the pruning and the storm work. After a hurricane, Semmes is on the back side of the storm from the bay but still inside the Hurricane Warning area, and the pines come down here too. The H & S Land landfill on Howells Ferry Road is where most of our Semmes debris goes.

Questions from Semmes homeowners

Do I need a permit to clear my lot in Semmes?

Not a tree permit for a residential lot. Grading, drainage and building permits run through the City of Semmes or Mobile County depending on the address, and your builder usually handles those. We flag any live oaks worth keeping before we start.

Should I keep the pines on my new lot?

Keep the ones with room and a full crown, especially longleafs, and take out the thin ones that grew in a stand and now stand alone beside the house pad. The University of Florida's hurricane research is clear that those are the trees that fail.

How much does it cost to clear an acre in Semmes?

Light brush $1,500 to $3,000 per acre with a forestry mulcher, heavy thickets $3,000 to $5,500, a half-acre home site with a dozen pines to remove $3,500 to $9,000.

Can you clear a pasture that's grown up?

Yes, it's the most common job we do here. Sweetgum and volunteer pine mulched smooth, ready to bush-hog the same season.
